Couch Surfing on Youth Homelessness Matters Day

The annual Couch Surfing event, held on National Youth Homelessness Matters Day, brings the community together and raises awareness about young people affected by homelessness and recognises young people’s strengths.

The Northern Territory has almost twelve times the national average rate of homelessness and the second equal highest rate of youth homelessness in the country. On any given night, there are more than 3,000 young Territorians sleeping rough in overcrowded conditions, couch surfing or sleeping on the streets. (ABS 2021)

At the Couch Surfing event, teams of young people race on brightly decorated couches to take out trophies and donated prizes. Young people and their families can connect with local organisations to learn about what they can do to help their friends or themselves if they are experiencing problems.

Everyone is welcome to watch the races, take part in free activities and visit information stalls promoting local support services.

The event is hosted by Anglicare NT and City of Darwin.
