Sentenced to a Skill

Sentenced to a Skill (STAS) is a community-based sentencing option through the Department of Corrections for young people aged 10 to 17 years.  STAS supports young people to break the cycle of offending and make positive contributions to their community.

Courts may sentence a young person to participate in the program for a period of three to twelve months, or longer if required.

The program provides a culturally secure, youth‑ and family‑centred, strengths‑based approach.

Key components include:

  • Individual case management
  • Pathways to re‑engage with school, further training or employment
  • Restorative practices
  • Strengthening family and community connections
  • Referrals and collaboration with relevant organisations

Funded by the Department of Corrections.
