Volunteering Week 2025

None are kinder than those who volunteer for others. Happy National Volunteer Week 2025! To all the volunteers out there, we see you and celebrate you.

Meet three of our volunteers with the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS).

This is Ryan (on the right), he visits Michael for an hour a fortnight.

“For me it boiled down to what I would want when I get older and potentially don’t have any family around. And that helped me decide.

“We all know nursing homes/aged care facilities can be a bit depressing (like hospitals); so I figured if I can help someone out by taking them out once a fortnight for lunch or a drink then why not.

“Time is one thing we all have and it doesn’t cost any money to spend time with someone.”

Rosemary has been visiting Mel (on the left) for about 8 months.

“I sometimes feel a bit isolated, and I thought my friends from communities would find it even harder being in town away from family. I like being with people and feel lucky to get some insight into how it is for First Nations people – I’m fascinated.

“People are pleased to see me – my family are pleased when they see me too however I think they are very content with all their friends and are not so interested in my daily life!!!”

This is Leeam (on the right), he and Walter are chess buddies.

“When I first started doing this, I was quite nervousand I was terrible at playing chess!

“Walter is a very good player and would beat me most of the time. As the weeks have passed, playing chess with Walter constantly, I’ve learnt how to get better at chess.

“I get to go out and be social while I play chess with Walter!”
