Volunteer marks 20 years of service

Anglicare NT is fortunate to have so many wonderful volunteers across our organisation. Despite being employed full time, Wendy Portlouis has spent more than 20 years volunteering with our Community Visitors Scheme.

The Community Visitors Scheme connects volunteer visitors with older people at risk of social or cultural isolation. Volunteers make a world of difference by bringing conversation, news, fun activities and friendship. Some also have a special connection through a shared language, life experience or deep cultural understanding.

The idea of visiting older people who may be lonely resonated with Wendy, after she moved to Darwin from interstate and experienced the complexities of making new friends in a transient city. Wendy felt she could make a small difference by providing companionship and says she will never forget some of the people she used to visit.

“Volunteering allows you to make a meaningful contribution, stay engaged and connected to your community.”

We sincerely thank Wendy for her many years of compassion and humble service. If you’d like to learn more about volunteering at Anglicare NT, please contact us on 08 8985 0000.
