NAIDOC Week 2021

Monday 5-9 July is NAIDOC Week across Australia. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Community picnics, tours to special sites, marches and rallies, events honouring Elders and families, and highlighting art and culture occur in many communities throughout the nation.

At Anglicare NT, we have held our own events and joined community events for many years. Whilst public NAIDOC celebrations have been postponed this year due to COVID-19, we still celebrate the achievements of the oldest continuous culture on the planet.

This year’s theme, ‘Heal Country!’ calls for all of us to seek greater protections for our lands, waters, sacred sites and cultural heritage. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Country is inherent to identity. It sustains lives in every aspect – spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally. It is more than a place. Country is family, kin, law, lore, ceremony, traditions, and language. It has been this way since the dawn of time.
