Anglicare NT supports Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. It is about building relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal  and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey—the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. The week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort.

Each of our Anglicare NT sites are hosting an event for Reconciliation Week.  In Alice Springs, staff will take part in a tour of the Finke River Mission to learn about its history and current work with Indigenous people in Central Australia. The event is a partnership between Anglicare NT, The Finke River Mission and the Lutheran Church. The Katherine office are hosting a celebration morning tea and Nhulunbuy office are hosting a community picnic. In Darwin, staff will take part in a competitive quiz and some staff will take part in a cultural tour.

Raising staff awareness, knowledge and respect of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures is one of the aspects of Anglicare NT’s Reconciliation Action Plan.  Our Reconciliation Action Plan Implementation Committee meets regularly to discuss ways for Anglicare NT to continuously implement our Reconciliation Action Plan and report on progress.
