Anglicare NT statement on the closure of YiSSA short stay accommodation
Anglicare NT is deeply concerned by the relocation of YiSSA to Batchelor and the impact it will have on residents, particularly women and children who rely on safe, affordable and accessible accommodation during times of crisis, in Darwin.
YiSSA is more than just a safe place to stay, it offers stability, safety and connection to essential services, schools, places of employment and shops. It’s this connection that in the midst of a housing crisis that offers people the fastest way out of the homelessness cycle, and why the proposed relocation to Batchelor is concerning.
Closing the service in Darwin and relocation a reduced model out of town is not a solution, and we implore the NT Government to reconsider their approach. Anglicare NT sees firsthand the consequences of a housing system under pressure. When housing options disappear, women and children disproportionately bear the consequences.
We are calling on the NT and Federal Governments to work collaboratively with Aboriginal Controlled Organisations, the community services sector and YiSSA residents to find a quick and more appropriate solution to YiSSA’s location
