LINKCARE COMMUNITY OPTIONS SERVICES

A Culturally Appropriate Service for Seniors
Linkcare is a Community Options Service that focuses on supporting frail-aged and complex needs seniors or younger persons with disabilities and their carers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in their homes, families and communities through the supplementation and support of the existing informal care networks.

Linkcare approaches the planning of services around the needs of individuals in a way that encourages change towards a client-focused approach in the community care network, supporting their independence for as long as possible.

The service comprises case management, brokerage, advocacy, respite, in-home support services, personal care, social and community support, Heart Starters’ gentle aerobic exercise and Fruit of Your Labour: a Vegetable and Herb Pilot Project.

“Heart Starters”: a fitness activity that improves wellbeing and independence.
Heart Starters is a Gym-based activity, which enhances seniors’ quality of life.  It involves an hour of gentle aerobic exercise with a fully qualified fitness instructor.

Regular exercise has many benefits.  It helps people stay mobile and flexible.  It can reduce pain.  Muscles become stronger.  Bone density and cardiac fitness increase.  Experts say that people who exercise regularly have lower risks of muscle injury, falls and broken bones.

Participants say that they feel much better with the exercise. It has improved their general wellbeing and mobility.  Some say that it has reduced their pain.  They feel much happier now.

After the exercise class, the group enjoys a light and nutritious lunch, which is also a pleasant social activity.   Sharing a meal is important in all cultures and helps people to bond with one another.

FEE: $7.00 per session, incls meal

“Cooking with Culture”: a nutritional and social cooking activity
Cooking with Culture is a new pilot project in partnership with the Multicultural Council of the Northern Territory .  The aim of the project is for seniors to share the magic of their cuisine, while discussing the nutritional values of different types of food.

It helps our clients maintain their independence as well as fostering relationships and friendships with others.  It minimises social isolation and contributes to becoming active members of their community.

Interpreters are available and participate in the cooking as if they were participants in the activity.

Some of the recipes will be made available on this website. Bon Appétit!
