Darwin Magistrate's Court Refreshment Trolley Service
The Refreshment Trolley Service was introduced to support the Court Chaplain Service at the Magistrate’s Court on 11th December 2000. The ladies (we now have one male volunteer) introduced the service on a voluntary basis to assist victims of crime and their families to cope with the difficult position they found themselves and their families in. Our aim was to provide a calm, quiet supportive environment to these victims.
Over time the service was then extended to all other persons within the court precinct. We are situated outside court 6. Although the Anglican Court Chaplain Service has ceased we have expanded from originally two days to now four days each week.
Our service is welcomed by people from all walks of life; this includes Court staff, Police, Prison Officers, Interpreters, Legal Aid, Aboriginal Services and all members of the public. The Victim Support Service also use our service for there clients. Appreciation and thanks have been received for our free community service that is serviced by Anglicare Volunteers.
All clients must be able to feel assured that we respect confidentially and privacy. The offer of a warm cuppa helps to relax them and make them feel more at ease in an unfamiliar environment. On occasions we have been able to give quiet support to distressed clients.
Providing this service to such a diverse group of people, treating them with respect and a sense of equality is very rewarding work. The refreshment trolley Service is regarded by all as an asset to the Darwin Magistrates Court.
The commitment and dedication of our eight volunteers is greatly appreciated. This community service would not exist if it wasn’t for this devoted enthusiastic group of wonderful people.
