Children's Services for 0-5 Years

Communities for Children Project

DSF logoCommunities for Children is about communities helping parents and families grow up young children (before birth, newborn babies to children aged 5 years) to be healthy and to get the best start in life. It is about communities deciding what services or programs are needed to become more child-friendly, so young children can learn and grow.

Anglicare NT is funded by the Australian Government, under the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy, to work with communities and non-government organisations (Community Partners) across the Miwatj Region (East Arnhem Land), to apply for funding to provide new services that will help families with young children. The project began in February 2005 and will end on 30th June 2009.

12 communities across the East Arnhem Region have been chosen by FaHCSIA where services for young children are needed.

These are: Nhulunbuy, Yirrkala, Gunyangara (Ski Beach), Millingimbi, Ramingining, Galiwinku, Gapuwiyak, Milyakburra (Bickerton Island), Alyangula, Angurugu, Umbakumba and Numbulwar and two Homeland areas Marthakal Homelands and Laynhapuy Homelands. Representatives of these communities form the Communities for Children Committee who come together to discuss the needs of their communities and the type of programs best suited for their community.

Anglicare NT has contracted a number of Community Partners over the life of the project. Milingimbi Council and Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education were partners in 2006 and 2007. Current partners are Aboriginal Resource and Development Services Inc, NT Christian Schools and Nungalinya College. Anglicare NT, operating as the Facilitating Partner also supports the Milyakburra Play and Learn Group and the “We Grow Them Up” Early Childhood Learning Festival held in April 2008.
