Child and Youth Residential Support Service

The Child Youth Residential Support Service (CYRSS) is a stabilization, assessment and transition unit for children and young people aged 8 – 17 years who are unable to be immediately placed in options such as fostercare or kinship placements. These children and young people are in the care of the Minister and receive case management services through the Department Family & Children’s Services (FACS) in Alice Springs.

Operating for over 20 years, from the Forrest House facility, the service provides a safe, nurturing and culturally appropriate environment for up to 7 children/young people. Support is provided for up to 3 months; each person is assisted to reconnect with their family and the education system, address health issues, develop social, behavioral and independent living skills and the personal resources needed to interact in positive ways with the community.

This placement option forms a critical part of the regional Out of Home Care system; referrals are made solely through the FACS Placement Support Team or FACS On Call system. Funding for this program is provided by the NT Department of Health and Community Services.
